THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES OF THE CONTINENTS

First on this list is Africa . There are many different theories as to the origin of Africa’s name. After the Romans defeated Carthage (which is in modern-day Tunisia in Northern Africa) in the third Punic War, they called their new province “Africa.” The most popular theory as to the origin of the name is that it was named for a native tribe there—the Afri, with “Africa” then being the feminine form of “Africus”, literally meaning “land of the Afri”. An alternate theory, which has a hole in it due to when the name was first used, is that it comes from the Phoenician word “afar” which means “dust.” Put together with the Latin suffix –ica, sometimes used to denote “land”, the name could mean “a land of dust.” Given Africa’s hot, desert-like climate in the north, which is where the Romans claimed their province, the Phoenician root is considered by many to be a plausibl...

WHY WE HAVE A SEVEN DAY WEEK AND THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES OF THE DAYS OF THE WEEK

Today I found out why we have a seven day week and the origins of each day’s name. Two of the earliest known civilizations to use a seven day week were the Babylonians and the Jews. The Babylonians marked time with lunar months and it is thought by many scholars that this is why they chose a seven day week (though direct evidence of this being why they did this is scant). That being said, each lunar month was made up of several different cycles—on the first day, the first visible crescent appeared; on approximately the seventh, the waxing half-moon could be seen; on approximately the fourteenth, the full moon; on approximately the twenty-first, the waning half-moon; and on approximately the twenty-eighth, the last visible crescent. As you can see, each notable cycle is made up of about seven days, hence, the seven-day week. You’ll notice I used the word “approximate” a lot in there.  This is because the moon phases don’t line up perfectly with ...

Can this be true? Picking your nose is not only disgusting - it can also be really dangerous

While, in isolation, bogies might be the source of much amusement, picking your nose is something we can all agree is 'frowned upon'. As a child , you probably had your hand swatted away by a parent as you furtively tried to have a good pick. It's not uncommon to see children have a good nasal root around, but by the time we reach adulthood, the understanding is that we've grown out of it (or have become better at doing it in private). There's no official figure on how many adults occasionally have a quick pick, but our estimation would be '99 per cent of them'. But aside from the fact it's seen as a bit gross and uncouth, IS having a surreptitious little pick such a bad thing? Stop picking your nose Yes, according to Dr Erich Voigt. Not just bad either - but dangerous. Speaking on a Business Insider video, Dr Voigt explains how introducing germs into your nose such as Staphylococcus aureus ("a germ which can live in the front of the nose...

Food for thought: One day a School Teacher....

One day a school teacher wrote on the board the following: 9×1=7 9×2=18 9×3=27 9×4=36 9×5=45 9×6=54 9×7=63 9×8=72 9×9=81 9×10=90 When she was done, she looked to the students and they were all laughing at her, because of the first equation which was wrong, and then the teacher said the following: "I wrote that first one wrong on purpose, because I wanted you to learn something important. This was for you to know how the world out there will treat you. You can see that I wrote RIGHT 9 times, but none of you congratulated me for it; you all laughed and criticized me because of one wrong thing I did. So this is the lesson... 'The world will never appreciate the good you do a million times, but will criticize the one wrong thing you do... But don't get discouraged. Always Rise Above All The Laughter And Criticism. Stay strong, accept the challenge and move on to higher pedestal!

Thought of the Day

Good-bad, right-wrong, once you tag things like that, you lose the ability to see the complete truth.... A murderer can also be a loving father. Don't tag things. Words are insufficient to describe the picture in totality. Try not to get trapped in the dictionary meaning of words. - Vijay Tendulkar

LESSON LEARNT TODAY: HARDSHIP BRINGS OUT INNOVATION.

Human beings often limit their prowess in life but this i potentials are often forced out by hardship.        The peculiarity of Nigerians is our "first class survival instinct".   A friend of mine would always says NIGERIANS CAN ADAPT TO ANY SITUATION. The above claim was complemented by a scenario in a polytechnic.          The recent increase in the price of kerosene has rendered many students STOVELESS and FIREWOODFUL or CHARCOALFUL. The students at a villa, identified as "Prominent Villa" has concurred to the trend thereby opting for charcoal pot because it is cost effective and health wise.        At inception of this trend, many of them still collect the remaining oil from their stoves to start the fire but at latter stages the slogan changed to "boys have to survive"        On this fateful day, they all woke up to discover that there wer...
