Bus bombing kills opposition fighters in Syria's Idlib

At least 25 people have been killed and 25 more injured, some critically, after a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest on a bus in Syria's Idlib province, adjoining Turkey, according to a monitoring network. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the bus was carrying opposition fighters when the blast happened near the Atmeh border crossing. Turkey's CNN Turk television citing local sources reported that the explosion occurred at the entrance of Atmeh refugee camp in Idlib late on Sunday. Turkey sent several ambulances to the scene of the attack; eight injured rebels who were in critical condition were taken to hospitals in Turkey's Hatay province. The rest are being treated in Syrian hospitals, Turkish media reported. Authorities in Hatay said in an official statement on Monday that four of the injured fighters later died in Turkish hospitals. Idlib is a major bastion of the Turkey-backed opposition to President Bashar al-Assad's rule...

Outcry as Bulgaria deports Gulen supporter to Turkey

Bulgaria’s deportation to Turkey of a supporter of US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for last month’s failed coup, sparked an outcry in the EU member state on Thursday. Businessman Abdullah Buyuk, 43, was deported on Wednesday “as a person with invalid documents” after being refused political asylum, Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova told bTV television on Thursday. This sparked outrage in the news media and on social media, with critics charging that Sofia had bowed to Turkish pressure and had failed to follow proper legal or transparent procedures. “It is disgusting that the Bulgarian leadership bends in such a humiliating way for the country and for every free citizen,” former justice minister Hristo Ivanov said on Facebook. The chairman of rights group the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, Krasimir Kanev, told AFP that the expulsion was “illegal”. Bulgarian media have dug around Buyuk’s case for weeks after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu s...

Mali arrests senior jihadist blamed for military base attack

Bamako – Malian special forces arrested a senior figure from the Ansar Dine jihadist group on Tuesday close to a central military base where he is accused of planning an attack that killed 17 soldiers. "Today, at around 16:00 (16:00 GMT) our special forces captured Mahmoud Barry, alias Abou Yehiya," one of the most senior figures in the group's branch operating in central Mali, an intelligence officer told AFP. Other security sources confirmed the arrest, adding that Barry was the "emir" of Ansar Dine's Macina combat unit and was behind several attacks on Malian security forces since last year. He is suspected of taking part in last week's attack on a military base of Nampala, near the border with Mauritania, that left 17 soldiers dead and another 35 wounded, said a security source. The attackers stormed the site, which has been targeted multiple times since January last year, taking control of it for several hours and making off with militar...

Fires whipped by high winds ravaged swaths of southern France and Portugal on Wednesday, killing at least four people, burning scores of homes and forcing the evacuation of thousands, including tourists. In France, multiple fires formed a column marching toward the Mediterranean port city of Marseille. Hundreds of miles away, a fire swept overnight into Funchal, the capital of Portugal's Madeira Islands, killing three elderly people and leaving more than 300 with minor burns and smoke inhalation. A forest watchman was killed on the mainland during the night when one of more than 100 blazes engulfed the caravan he was sleeping in 150 kilometers (95 miles) north of Lisbon. Donald Trump accuses Obama of being 'founder of ISIL'

Donald Trump accused President Barack Obama on Wednesday of founding the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL, also known as ISIS) that is wreaking havoc from the Middle East to European cities. A moment later, on another topic, he emphasised the president's full legal name: Barack Hussein Obama. "In many respects, you know, they honour President Obama," Trump said during a raucous campaign rally outside Fort Lauderdale, Florida. "He is the founder of ISIS." He repeated the allegation three times. "He's the founder of ISIS, okay?" he added. "He's the founder. He founded ISIS." Trump has long blamed Obama and his former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for pursuing Middle East policies that created a power vacuum in Iraq that was exploited by ISIL. He has sharply criticised Obama for announcing that he would pull US troops out of Iraq, a decision that many Obama critics say created the kind of instability i...

Canadian media reported that a police operation had taken place in Strathroy, Ontario, about 225km (140 miles) south-west of Toronto. CBC News reported that a suspect had been killed, but this was not confirmed, reports the BBC. The RCMP statement said it had received “credible information of a potential terrorist threat”. “A suspect was identified and the proper course of action has been taken to ensure that there is no danger to the public’s safety,” it added. “As this is still an unfolding matter and the investigation is still under way, we are not able to provide further comment at this time.”

French teenage girl charged over terror attack plot

A French court on Monday remanded in custody a 16-year-old girl accused of planning a jihadist attack in a country on edge following a series of brutal terror assaults, a judicial source said. The teenager was charged with "criminal conspiracy with terrorists" and "provocation to committing terrorist acts using online communication", the source said on condition of anonymity. Even at her young age, the "highly radicalised" girl was an administrator of a group on the encrypted messaging app Telegram. "She relayed numerous Islamic State group propaganda messages calling for attacks, and she also expressed her own intention of taking action," a source close to the investigation said. The girl, with no criminal record, was taken into custody last Thursday, during an anti-terror sweep in the Paris suburb of Melun. The security forces then raided her family home, but found neither explosives nor firearms there. "At this stage in th...

Bollywood star, Salman Khan, avoids jail

An Indian court on Monday acquitted Bollywood superstar Salman Khan of killing protected wildlife 18 years ago, ending the latest long-running case against the actor. Khan was convicted in 2006 of hunting rare gazelles while he was shooting a film in the northern state of Rajasthan eight years earlier. He was sentenced to one and five years in jail for two separate cases of shooting the animals, but the actor has filed appeals that have kept him from serving the stints. High Court judge Nirmaljit Kaur cleared the actor in both cases, ruling that the pellets recovered from the animals were not fired from Khan's gun. "The honourable high court has not agreed to the prosecution evidence or its documents in both the cases. Definitely, it's a good thing that an innocent man has received justice," Khan's lawyer Hastimal Saraswat told NDTV. The 50-year-old bachelor was not in court in the northern city of Jodhpur to hear the judgement. Indian courts are o...
