Our correspondent gathered that the pastor whose church could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report reportedly became motionless and speechless after he had allegedly destroyed some shrines in the town. It was gathered that the cleric was reported to have told his congregation that he had a revelation to destroy all the shrines in Ketu community. After being found transfixed in the shrine, residents of the area raised the alarm, following which custodians of the shrines came to the place. THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES OF THE CONTINENTS

First on this list is Africa . There are many different theories as to the origin of Africa’s name. After the Romans defeated Carthage (which is in modern-day Tunisia in Northern Africa) in the third Punic War, they called their new province “Africa.” The most popular theory as to the origin of the name is that it was named for a native tribe there—the Afri, with “Africa” then being the feminine form of “Africus”, literally meaning “land of the Afri”. An alternate theory, which has a hole in it due to when the name was first used, is that it comes from the Phoenician word “afar” which means “dust.” Put together with the Latin suffix –ica, sometimes used to denote “land”, the name could mean “a land of dust.” Given Africa’s hot, desert-like climate in the north, which is where the Romans claimed their province, the Phoenician root is considered by many to be a plausibl...

WHY WE HAVE A SEVEN DAY WEEK AND THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES OF THE DAYS OF THE WEEK

Today I found out why we have a seven day week and the origins of each day’s name. Two of the earliest known civilizations to use a seven day week were the Babylonians and the Jews. The Babylonians marked time with lunar months and it is thought by many scholars that this is why they chose a seven day week (though direct evidence of this being why they did this is scant). That being said, each lunar month was made up of several different cycles—on the first day, the first visible crescent appeared; on approximately the seventh, the waxing half-moon could be seen; on approximately the fourteenth, the full moon; on approximately the twenty-first, the waning half-moon; and on approximately the twenty-eighth, the last visible crescent. As you can see, each notable cycle is made up of about seven days, hence, the seven-day week. You’ll notice I used the word “approximate” a lot in there.  This is because the moon phases don’t line up perfectly with ...

4 times Hon. Patrick has confused us with his English

Patrick Obahiagbon is a name we started hearing when he began to represent Oredo Federal Constituency of Edo state at the House of Representatives in 2007. The catch was that he spoke jaw-breaking words, like literally jaw breaking. Words that you probably won’t be able to pronounce when hungry. When he was interviewed by Vanguard, the law graduate of Politician appealed to his audience to try to understand what he speaks and in his own words “ The intention is not to deliberately befuddle or obfuscate them. I do not set out to deposit my audience in a portmanteau of indecipherability ” Which in layman English simply means that he doesn’t mean to confuse us intentionally smh . But now we ask, if it’s not intentional, what is it Honorable? We explained a few times Honorable Obahiagbon spoke to us in layman English because life is really too short to look for a dictionary when this man speaks. 1. When he spoke about the death of forme...

He said: "I did not remove any part of her body; I only killed her for the fun of it. I made love with her in the bush before killing her. I am not a cultist. It was when I killed her that I realised I made a big mistake and I wept bitterly" Speaking after his arrest by police detectives in Ondo State, Oweniwe, whose parents are cassava farmers in Ogbese area of the state, said he was pushed by the devil. Chukwudi and the girlfriend, Adeyeye Nifemi, were both in 300 level in the Science Laboratory Technology, SLT, department. He left her in the bush, thinking she was dead, only to return the next day to find her a...

‘Rice will sell for N9k before December’ - APC Chieftain

A top Chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), in Lagos State, Ganiyu Quadri, has reiterated that his party is doing everything possible to place the agro-business scheme run by the State government in Kebbi State on a high end, so that the cost of rice will drop to a mere N9,000 by December, from the present price of between N18,500 and N20,000. Quadri, who is the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area in the state, made this bold declaration while receiving a delegation of Rotary Club of Akowonjo 9110, led by its District-Governor, Patrick Ikheloa, and President, Shola Abidakun, stressing that the APC administration in Lagos swung into agro-business to ensure food security for its people. “By the end of this year, or first quarter next year, things will change in Lagos. Already, we are into agro-business in Kebbi State. We have massive land on which we planted grains, among which is rice, our people’s staple food. And it is expected that the truckloads of ...

Facebook aims for video-loving teenagers with new app

Facebook on Friday took direct aim at video-loving adolescents, and Snapchat, with the release of a new iPhone app that allows teens to watch clips about the lives of their classmates. The app, called Lifestage, was released with no fanfare, and is available for anyone to download on iPhone, although seeing profiles of other users is reserved for those 21 years of age or younger. The social network allows users to make video clips to describe likes, peeves, dance styles, and other aspects of their character. Those clips are woven together to serve as public profiles that can be viewed by other Lifestage members, provided they are young enough. A tool in the app lets users block and report older folks. “Lifestage makes it easy and fun to share a visual profile of who you are with your school network,” the app’s iTunes store description says. Once enough students at any given school are on the app, it becomes “unlocked.” “Once your school is unlo...

Can't stop laughing!! PHOTOS: University students made to wear anti-cheating helmets

Photographs posted to Bangkok’s Kasetsart University alumni Facebook page appears to show students wearing a “helmet”, which consist of a piece of paper wrapped around the head and pieces of paper stapled to either side. Kasetsart University is a public university, ranked one of the best in Thailand and with a focus on agriculture, food, technology and innovation. The low-tech anti-cheating helmet invention doesn’t look sophisticated, but would function like horse blinkers and prevent wearers from glancing to the side — which should prevent any sneaky peeks at neighbours’ answers. And it seems the anti-cheating helmet has caught on, with Weerachai Phutdhawong, a University of Agricultural Sciences associate professor, posting photos of several versions on Facebook. One design resembles a cardboard box, with a hole cut out for the neck and one side removed, so that wearers can see. But another version has only a small slit cut out for the eyes, to...

Wanna Live Long? Yoga, abstinence from sex key to long life – Indian monk

Looking remarkably unlined for his claimed 120 years, an Indian monk who says he is the oldest man to have ever lived puts his longevity down to no sex or spices, and daily yoga. Hindu monk Swami Sivananda was born on August 8, 1896, according to his passport. If true, his life would have spanned three centuries, but despite his apparent age he remains strong enough to perform yoga for hours at a time. He is now applying to Guinness World Records to verify his claim. It currently lists Japan’s Jiroemon Kimura, who died in June 2013 aged 116 years and 54 days, as the oldest man to have ever lived. India’s passport authorities confirmed Sivananda’s age from a temple register, the only record many Indians even decades younger have of their date of birth. However it would be extremely difficult to independently verify his age. Sivananda was featured by local media earlier this summer, with the Times of India noting he looked 50 years younger than his apparent age but ...

Can this be true? Picking your nose is not only disgusting - it can also be really dangerous

While, in isolation, bogies might be the source of much amusement, picking your nose is something we can all agree is 'frowned upon'. As a child , you probably had your hand swatted away by a parent as you furtively tried to have a good pick. It's not uncommon to see children have a good nasal root around, but by the time we reach adulthood, the understanding is that we've grown out of it (or have become better at doing it in private). There's no official figure on how many adults occasionally have a quick pick, but our estimation would be '99 per cent of them'. But aside from the fact it's seen as a bit gross and uncouth, IS having a surreptitious little pick such a bad thing? Stop picking your nose Yes, according to Dr Erich Voigt. Not just bad either - but dangerous. Speaking on a Business Insider video, Dr Voigt explains how introducing germs into your nose such as Staphylococcus aureus ("a germ which can live in the front of the nose...

Ghanaian Bishop is Accused of Adultery After Flogging Members Over Fornication

Ghana’s most controversial man of God, Bishop Daniel Obinim sparked yet another outrage on social media today after a video showing him flogging a teenage girl and her alleged boyfriend in the full glare of his congregation surfaced online, and stirred up conversations on why the ‘Angel of God’ has not yet been arrested. According to Olisa.TV, the incident took place yesterday at Obinim’s International Godsway Church in Ghana. The bishop had claimed that his “angels” revealed to him that the two youngsters were fornicating, leading him to bring them out during service and punish them for their sins. He also stated that their s*xual affair had resulted in pregnancy and they had secretly terminated it. In the video which was televised live on his OBTV, many of Obinim’s followers in the church, including his musician wife, Florence Obinim were seen laughing as the bishop repeatedly whipped the duo. At some point, his junior pastors also joined in the flogging. Twitter ...

Couple have sex on Live TV while BBC reporter hosts sporting action at the Rio Olympics

This is the hilarious moment BBC Olympics presenter Dan Walker was interrupted by a couple who appeared to be having sex behind him on a beach in Rio. As Walker talked on Live TV, he realized that social media viewers were tweeting about the 'amorous' positioning of a couple behind him in the shoreline background. He looked back and saw what was going on and tried to laugh it off by telling viewers that the scene behind him wasn't "that" and that the pair were 'having a hug' or 'reading a book.... in a strange pose'. Walker also informed viewers that his camera team were not going to zoom in on the couple to find out what was really going on...to the disappointment of some.

Lagos is third worst city to live in – The Economist

Latest report by The Economist Intelligence Unit ranks Lagos as the third worst city to live, maintaining its position at the lowest ebb of the Global Liveability index. In the report released yesterday, Lagos placed 138th out of the 140 cities ranked in the latest liveability survey, just ahead of Tripoli and Damascus. “Of the poorer-scoring cities, 13 continue to occupy the very bottom tier of liveability, where ratings fall below 50 percent and most aspects of living are severely restricted. “Continued threats from groups like Boko Haram acts as a constraint to improving stability in Lagos,” the report stated. Hostilities in Libya prompted a sharp decline in liveability in Tripoli, according to the report, while Damascus, although seeing a stabilisation in its decline, remained rooted to the bottom. The top five best countries to live in, according to the report, remain unchanged from last year and they include Melbourne, Australian; Vienna, Austria; Vancouver, Canada;...

Neighbour Arrested After Bride-To-Be Was Murdered In Her Home

A bride-to-be was strangled and then had her mouth taped shut in her own home before it was set on fire. A post-mortem on Amanda Strous revealed she suffered significant burns and was subjected to blunt force injuries before she died on June 18. The 27-year-old, from Charlotte, North Carolina, in the US, was found with only a pair of bikini bottoms on and her mouth covered with duct tape. Her neighbour, Matthew Thomas Benner, has been charged with her murder and first-degree arson. Authorities believe the 28-year-old, who lived in the same apartment complex, had been stalking Strous. The autopsy was carried out by Mecklenburg County Medical Examiners Office, and investigators are also looking at the results of a rape kit to determine if she was also sexually assaulted before her death. According to WSOC-TV, released search warrants suggest Benner had expressed interest in dating Strous and a friend of hers. Benner fled Charlotte after she was killed, but confessed to ...

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a medical doctor, Hassan Yakubu, for his alleged role in the removal of the kidney of a 24-year-old male patient in his clinic.
