Stop using toothpick after eating - Nigerian dentist warns

An expert in Dentistry in Ilorin, Kwara State, Dr Alatishe Muhammad, has warned that using toothpick to remove food remnant from teeth could harm the teeth and gums. He said what was medically recommended was cleaning between the teeth at least once a day, using an interdental cleaner such as floss. He said: "Using a toothpick is not an ideal way to remove something stuck between your teeth. Toothpicks can cause abrasion and damage to your teeth at the base where they meet the gums. This can lead to gum disease and other dental problems."

Resident doctors’ looming strike

THE nation’s teaching hospitals may experience another round of industrial crisis anytime from now if resident doctors carry out their threat to resume their suspended strike. They are planning to down tools again over the alleged failure of the Federal Government to fulfill the terms of the agreement it entered into with them. The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has ordered its members to withdraw their services from the 25 tertiary medical facilities across the country. Its President, Dr. Muhammed Adamu Askira, explained that the decision to embark on another round of strike was reached at the end of their national executive council meeting held between July 25 and 30 in Keffi, Nasarawa State. He further argued that a series of agreements reached with the government on NARD’s demands were yet to be implemented by the managements of the tertiary medical centres. Alcohol Linked to 7 Cancers

New research links alcohol with seven types of cancer. Writing in the journal Addiction, researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand say alcohol has a causal association with cancer of the oropharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon, rectum and female breast. While there has been evidence of an association between alcohol and cancer, the study claims it is causal, meaning it “directly causes cancer.” The study was large, taking into account 10 years of global data collected by groups such as the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The risk of cancer from alcohol is largest among heavy drinkers, but affects both light and moderate drinkers as well. According to the study, alcohol was responsible for 5.8 percent of all cancer deaths in 2012.
