S/Korea threatens war against North Korea

outh Korea has a plan to annihilate the North Korean capital if it shows any signs of mounting a nuclear attack, according to reports from Seoul. A military source told the Yonhap news agency every part of Pyongyang “will be completely destroyed by ballistic missiles and high-explosives shells”. Yonhap has close ties to South Korea’s government and is publicly funded. On Friday North Korea carried out what it said was its fifth, and largest, nuclear test. The international community is considering its response. The US says it is considering its own sanctions, in addition to any imposed by the UN Security Council, Japan and South Korea. Pyongyang responded on Sunday by calling the threats of “meaningless sanctions… highly laughable”. The South Korean military official told Yonhap that Pyongyang districts thought to be hiding the North’s leadership would be particularly targeted in any attack. The city, the source said, “will be reduc...

Indian Boy Suffers Skin Disorder, His Hands & Feet Turn To “Tree Roots”

Ripon Sarker from Thakurgaon, Bangladesh suffers from the condition epidermodysplasia verruciformis, which causes abnormal susceptibility to human papillomavirus – causing the growth of scaly warts. The young boy was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 20 for treatment for the first time, as his family couldn’t afford it. His father Mahendra Das said: ‘They haven’t carried out tests on him. Physicians say they will look into this matter before treatment.’ Poor Ripon cannot walk or eat by himself because of his tree-like hands and feet. Thankfully, doctors have said they are hopeful that his hands and feet are operable as his fingers and toes and can still be identified. Ripon’s symptoms match the ones of 26-year-old Abul Bajandar – dubbed ‘tree man’, who also has the same condition and was recently operated at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Ripon is a class II student of Ketgaon Government Primary School, was affected when he was only three ...

At least 38 people died in a powerful earthquake that hit central Italy early on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the Civil Protection Department said. Postiglione said 27 people had died between the towns of Accumoli and Amatrice, and a further 10 people had died in the nearby Arquata area. Later in the press conference, she increased the death toll to 38, without giving further details.

Myanmar’s Suu Kyi says China to support peace talks

Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi expects China to support historic peace talks with armed groups near the countries’ troubled joint border, she said Friday during a landmark visit overshadowed by a stalled dam project. “We do believe that as a good neighbour China will do everything possible to promote our peace process,” Suu Kyi told reporters in Beijing ahead of meeting China’s President Xi Jinping. “China, as a neighbour which shares a very important border along which there are many ethnic armed groups, is important in its goodwill,” she added. Myanmar will hold a long-planned conference with armed ethnic groups later this month, as Suu Kyi targets peace as a prelude to rebooting the economy after her party won a landslide election victory. “If you ask me what my most important aim is for my country, that is to achieve peace and unity among the different peoples of our union,” Suu Kyi said. “Without peace, there can be no sustained development”. Several comple...

Syria's civil war: Russian jets bomb rebels from Iran

Russian jets based in Iran on Tuesday struck targets inside Syria, the Russian defence ministry said, after Moscow deployed aircraft to an Iranian air force base to widen its campaign in Syria. The ministry said the strikes, by Tupolev-22M3 long-range bombers and Sukhoi-34 fighter bombers, were launched from the Hamadan air base in Western Iran. It is thought to be the first time Russia has struck targets inside Syria from Iran since it launched a bombing campaign to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in September last year. The move came amid reports in Russian media that Moscow has asked Iran and Iraq for permission to fire cruise missiles at Syrian targets across their territory from the Caspian Sea. The ministry said Tuesday's strikes had targeted the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) and fighters affiliated with the group previously known as the al-Nusra Front in the Aleppo, Idlib and Deir el-Zor provinces. Both groups have been...

11 newborns dead in Baghdad hospital blaze

At least 11 premature babies were killed Wednesday in a fire that tore through one of Baghdad’s largest maternity hospitals, medical and security sources said. Health ministry spokesman Ahmed al-Rudeini told AFP the blaze at the Yarmuk hospital in west Baghdad was started by an electrical fault. He added that 29 female patients in Yarmuk “were evacuated to other hospitals in the capital.” An official at Iraq’s interior ministry confirmed the death toll from the fire, adding that three other babies were being treated for smoke inhalation. Many of Baghdad’s public hospitals are considered of poor quality, pushing a number of Iraqis to seek private healthcare.

Turkey Requests Extradition Of Cleric From U.S. Who Is Believed To Have A Hand In Failed coup

Turkey has formally requested the extradition of cleric Fethullah Gulen from the United States, the prime minister said Tuesday, as the government widens its purge following a failed military coup over the weekend. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blames Gulen, a longtime bitter rival, for the attempted coup that began Friday night, which left at least 232 people dead and gave way to mass arrests and dismissals. He is believed to have a hand in it.
