Rio 2016: Kenya Athletes Slam Shanty Accommodation

Kenyan athletes are stranded in a Rio shanty town where gun shots can be heard following the closure of the Olympic village, the team captain says.

Officials delayed their return home as they looked for a “cheap flight”, said Wesley Korir, a marathon runner who is also an opposition MP.

He posted images on Twitter of dilapidated buildings in the area where he said they were forced to stay.

Team Kenya has been dogged by allegations of mismanagement at Rio.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered an investigation into the mismanagement of the team.

Athletes had experienced “hell”, and he would demand action when he returned home, Korir said.

The team won 13 medals, the highest by an African country, and this “is how they threat us”, he added.

The men’s marathon team is among the athletes stuck in the shanty town, except for gold medallist Eliud Kipchoge who bought his own ticket to leave, Korir said.

Athletes were ordered to stay indoors as gun shots were heard all night, he added in a tweet.

Kenya won six gold medals, six silver and a bronze at the Games, which ended on Sunday, reports the BBC.

Bollywood star, Salman Khan, avoids jail

An Indian court on Monday acquitted Bollywood superstar Salman Khan of killing protected wildlife 18 years ago, ending the latest long-running case against the actor. Khan was convicted in 2006 of hunting rare gazelles while he was shooting a film in the northern state of Rajasthan eight years earlier. He was sentenced to one and five years in jail for two separate cases of shooting the animals, but the actor has filed appeals that have kept him from serving the stints. High Court judge Nirmaljit Kaur cleared the actor in both cases, ruling that the pellets recovered from the animals were not fired from Khan's gun. "The honourable high court has not agreed to the prosecution evidence or its documents in both the cases. Definitely, it's a good thing that an innocent man has received justice," Khan's lawyer Hastimal Saraswat told NDTV. The 50-year-old bachelor was not in court in the northern city of Jodhpur to hear the judgement. Indian courts are o...
